Manifesto #43 Steve Holl (exercise)

An illustrated translation of the manifesto. Steve Holl is an architect, the text and lines mimics his design style.

Architecture = Integral Phenomena

Manifesto #43:

At the beginning of the 21st century, architecture can be the most effective instrument for reconstructing the relations between our species and the earth. There is no better tool with which to redesign the link between mind-body and environment. The mind cannot be separated from its phenomenal senses via the body, which in turn should not be separated from the phenomenal aspects of architecture. The study of architecture is subjective, intuitive, psychological, and scientific.

Today’s new knowledge connects the psychological pressures of modern life with chronic stress-provoking illness. The link between mind-body and environment is now a territory of focus, and we can scientifically argue the timely importance of architecture as an

integral phenomenon.

A mind-body environment focus might integrate organisms in structure or volume with complex geometric relationships. This new three-pronged vision will identify several lines of disruption of the given order. Each straight line, each curved line, each twisted line, when integral to a new order of mind-body environment linkages, becomes an active element catalysing the reformation of one reality into another. The urgent need for this new architecture can readily be felt in any reading of the Science Times (as can the urgent need to displace a corrupt fossil-fuel obsessed national leadership). Man belongs to a category of thinking and reflecting species whose behavior affects all non-reflecting species. The crucial tool, architecture, must be put in futuristic service of the new dynamic linkage of mind-body-environment.

Manifesto (Disobedience I)

I made this illustration to go along with my manifesto at the time. Disobedience was the topic I chose to express what I stand for. The image has the white hands of power as the puppeteer to the raised fists of disobedience. The text on the arms are references to different pop culture movies, lyrics, and texts.

Manifesto (Disobedience II)

As I refined the image, I decided to hand illustrate the hammer and fist. I used the color scheme of most war posters that speak of

a similar message.

Manifesto (Disobedience III)

The revisited poster has the manifesto on the hammer and arm.

Define

Purpose is what drives us to achieve power. In every purpose there is the ability to command respect. The Ideology of a believe system is set up to gain followers and instill in them an idea. That single idea will define them, it will change them, and inspire them to pass it on.

There is something missing from the minds of people in the 21st century. They believe in a system that cannot be broken and they continue to do what they are told. They sit in front of a television and worship a god of illusions. The truth about life is perceived through a lit box that continues to feed the population with one simple command, Obey.

In this world of deception, one can only focus on the absolute, disobedience. Disobedience derives from the idea that one must do something to change the way people perceive their philosophical beliefs by challenging them to do something different. In every situation an individual has the opportunity to make another person consider an alternate universal truth about how they interpret reality. However, one must be critical and coherently make responsible choices to change the views of the masses. Man continues to kneel before a false truth, but in that intimate knowledge, the crucial element, disobedience, is waiting to give an idea to another that will define them.

Hammer & Fist

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience.

Sir Bedivere

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. It depicts Sir Bedivere deciding if he should cast Excalibur into the lake as he is instructed by the dying Arthur. He decides not to three times.

David

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. David with the head of Goliath, the boy ruler listened to no one as he decided

to face the giant.

Run for the Hills

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. A First Nation on horseback. This image represented the Iron Maiden song “Run for the Hills”.

Kykolops

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. Kykolops thinks about Nohbdy (Odysseus), before his eye is put out by the hero.

Patroclus

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. Patroclus decides to wear Achilles’ armor to lead the Greeks in battle.

Vader

This image was apart of a small publication on disobedience. Darth is one of the more intriguing characters that defines himself through disobedience. He disobeys two distinct times, one in the service of good and the other in the service of evil. He betrays he mentor and beliefs

to rise to supreme power with this tormentor, Emperor Palpatine in episode III. However, he eventually kills his master in episode VI, the same character he trusted and ruled the galaxy with.

Disobedience Publication

The small publication is split up into six different sections: Knowledge (philosophy and disobedience), Cult (religion and disobedience), Books (Literature and disobedience), Myths (Mythology and disobedience), Voice (songs and disobedience), and Past (history and disobedience).

I eventually took out the images and was left with the treatment of the titles as strips of paper that would interact with the text by covering it. The publication was also ripped to size instead of cut. The theme of this publication was to use the most humble ways of print to produce

a publication for the masses.
