Type I summer 2011

Gorilla Tape Figure (leg)

I made a figure using cardboard, Gorilla Tape, and a texture spray paint. I started with my leg first and cut cardboard shapes to fit on my leg. The process to make the figure was grueling and took the better part of the weekend to make. Time was short, so I had to work fast. Eventually I had to use my cousin John as the model, while Ben and I cut, and ripped tape to form to his body.

Gorilla Tape Figure (Torso)

The Torso and almost the entire figure is hallow. only copper wire is used in some places for reinforcement. The trick was to fashion the cardboard onto my body or johns body and be able to take it off.

Gorilla Tape Figure (feet and leg)

The feet were modeled off of a pair of indoor soccer shoes I had. They will forever be apart of this figure.

Gorilla Tape Figure (work area)

This project left a giant mess when I was working.

Gorilla Tape Figure

The completed sculpture. The figure is shown worshiping two Times New Roman 'Ts' to symbolize how text is a major part of spreading the word of God.

Exhibition Graphics (for the completed Gorilla Tape Figure)

I used my church as the spot that I would place the sculpted man. These are the signs that would be used to give information about the piece. The somewhat controversial text reads:

“Worship” explores the idea that the letter “T” and God are the same. The Christian religion uses the cross as an iconic symbol to represent their dogma. The piece expresses the idea that the cross is a letter “T” and it is the symbol that the Christian faith worships. Thus the piece shows

a man kneeling, in front of a letter as opposes to a cross. Type is used to spread the faith in many religions and it is only fitting for the figure to worship that which is responsible for the documentation, legitimacy, and success of Christian faith. This project was never fully completed.

This is another small publication that deals with only type. The introduction to the book reads:

This type book examines the relationship between philosophy, superheroes, the Nuremberg laws of nazi Germany, and the jim crow laws of the South. The idea is for the reader to view the correlations of all three subjects and make a connect between them. The table of contents on the opposite page shows where each text is placed in the book. The main text, Plato's republic runs through out the entire book as one long excerpt. The conversation between the characters discusses morals and ethics as it applies to civilization. Socrates and his friends discuss the implications of creating a governing body that is composed of justice and truth. On the right if Plato’s Republic are small excerpts of Superheroes and Philosophy . These small paragraphs are ideas about how a superhero must address his or her role in society and the ethical way to fight crime. It is interesting to consider all the morals a superhero must have a grasp on to actually have an impact on society. With all the power that superheroes posses it is no wonder that some of them use their powers for evil. On the bottom of the page there are the Nuremberg Laws of Nazi Germany and the Jim Crow Laws of the South. These have a direct interaction with the Graphic Novel X-Men God Loves, Man Kills. In the graphic novel, the X-Men go through similar racist persecution by mankind . In this case, instead of a race that is thought of as “inferior” it is clear that mutants have special abilities, which make them an evolved human life form. Fear is the main source of the hate crimes against mutants. In this case mutants are a intimate threat to the survival of humans and must register or by eradicated. Ultimately, like the Jews of Nazi Germany, registration leads to the eventual holocaust. In the graphic novel, the X-Men and other mutants are treated differently because of their powers and physical deformities. The idea of treating people differently is present throughout history. In this case, the fact that African Americans were born with a different color skin type made them inferior to their white suppressors. Much like the X-Men , Blacks in the South committed no crime but being born. The prosecution of Jews and Blacks can be directly related to the hardships that the X-Men face while walking the fine line of superhero or super villain. Morals and ethics are so important to our society. X-Men: Are such an intriguing band of superheroes because in their world they are not fully embraced by their human counterparts. Instead they are mocked, hated, feared, and prosecuted because of their differences. This book hopefully shows the relationship between all five text and how the ideas presented in Plato’s Republic all depend on unity.
